[Young Miller] Korean Barley Tea (500g)

Barley tea (보리차) is a naturally caffeine-free drink made from roasted barley.

It’s an easy, everyday choice if you want steady hydration without stimulants. In Korea and Japan, it’s commonly served in place of water because it’s gentle on the stomach, easy to drink, and suitable for everyone—including children and pregnant individuals.

Many people reach for barley tea when they’re trying to cut back on coffee or caffeine, without giving up a warm, comforting drink.

Flavor-wise, barley tea is light and clean, with a soft toasted, nutty aroma. It’s not bitter, grassy, or sharp like some teas. There’s no sweetness here unless it’s blended with other grains—the roasting adds just enough depth while keeping the finish smooth and refreshing. It’s the kind of drink you can sip all day without getting tired of it.

Barley tea is great both hot and cold. Many people brew it hot and then chill it for later, especially in warmer months, when it becomes a crisp, refreshing alternative to plain water. Warm in the winter or iced in the summer—it’s calm, versatile, and easy to keep on hand every day.

Today, we’re introducing Young Miller's Barley Tea. They’re a small, independent mill in Korea with over 20 years of experience working with grains.

This is one of their best-selling teas (right alongside corn tea). They use 100% Korea-grown barley and pressure-roast it to bring out that clean, lightly toasted aroma—never burnt, never heavy.

One thing to note: barley tea has no natural sweetness.

Because of that, some people like to brew it together with corn tea for a slightly rounder flavor.

Totally optional—drink it the way you like.

How to make it:

  • Bring 1L of water to a boil

  • Add 6 spoonfuls of barley (add more if want stronger)

  • Boil on high heat for 3–5 minutes

  • Remove the barley (don’t leave it in—it can release starch and make the tea cloudy)

  • Transfer to another container, leave the lid open, and let it cool

Enjoy it hot, or chill it in the fridge and drink it cold.

Available in 500g or 1kg.

Preserving Harvest-Fresh Quality

Working alongside our parents at the mill, we often milled grains that customers brought to us. Over time, we noticed that many grains had been improperly stored at room temperature—resulting in spoilage, insect damage, or excessive dryness.

When such grains are roasted, no amount of skill or careful blending can compensate. The difference in flavor and aroma between properly stored grains and poorly stored ones is unmistakable.

In truth, storing a year’s supply of grains in low-temperature conditions is not easy.

At Young Mill, however, we are committed to delivering consistent, top-tier quality. That is why all sun-dried grains are transferred immediately upon harvest into large-scale refrigerated storage facilities. By maintaining low-temperature storage year-round, we preserve the grains’ harvest-fresh aroma and flavor.

From careful ingredient selection to strict storage standards, we remain uncompromising to ensure fresh, flavorful quality.

A Mill Specialized in Misugaru

Traditional grinders often leave the millstone exposed, making them vulnerable to dust and impurities. In many cases, millstones are also used for long periods without replacement.

Young Mill uses hygienic stainless-steel grinders, the same standard used for baby food preparation. This ensures a clean process and produces a fine, smooth texture with an exceptionally gentle mouthfeel.

HOW TO BREW

  • Prepare 1 liter of boiling water.
  • Add 6 spoonfuls of Young Mill grain tea to the boiling water.
  • Boil over high heat for 3–5 minutes.
  • Allow the tea to cool slightly, then remove the solids before serving.

TIPS ON KOREAN TEA

  • Grain teas should NOT be simmered slowly over low heat for a long time. This can cause the starches to dissolve, making the water cloudy and giving the tea an unpleasant, astringent taste. Always boil over high heat for 3–5 minutes only.
  • Boil corn tea on high-heat for 5–10 minutes. After turning off the heat, discard the corn, transfer the tea to another container, leave the lid open, and allow it to cool.
  • For job’s tears tea, use 2 large measuring spoons per 1 liter of water.
  • For brown rice tea or black rice tea, do not remove the rice after brewing. Enjoy the tea together with the boiled rice for better flavor.
