Korean Perilla Oil, Lightly Toasted

[Happy Jeong-Eun's] Fresh-Pressed Toasted Perilla Oil

  • 100% Korea-grown perilla
  • Gently toasted
  • 1 ingredient
  • HACCP-certified facility

A beautifully balanced perilla oil, gently toasted for a rich, nutty flavor that's perfect for everyday Korean cooking.

Made by Happy Jeong-Eun's, an owner-operated farm near the pristine foothills of Mt. Jirisan, Happy Jeong-Eun's toasted perilla oil (행복한 정은씨의 햇들기름) begins with 100% Korea-grown perilla seeds. The seeds are carefully cleaned, gently toasted at a controlled temperature, then low-temperature pressed.

This brings out the seeds' naturally nutty aroma while preserving the oil's fresh, clean character and its naturally occurring omega-3 fatty acids. Perilla oil is rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid, and is considered one of the richest plant-based sources of omega-3.

This toasted version is the one you want for most Korean recipes: richer and nuttier than untoasted perilla oil, yet cleaner and less smoky than traditionally roasted varieties.

Its balanced flavor adds a delicious nutty richness without overpowering the other ingredients. Drizzle it over bibimbap, mix it into noodles (막국수!), season namul and sautéed vegetables, or add a finishing touch to soups and stews. It also pairs beautifully with soy sauce for a simple dipping sauce.

Happy Jeong-Eun's oversees the entire process, from sourcing Korea-grown perilla seeds to pressing and bottling the finished oil, in a hygienically managed, HACCP-certified facility for careful handling and consistent quality in every bottle.

won't be the last time

This is the second time I ordered perilla oil from Jirisan. Last time I had the unroasted version, so I wanted to try something different. Although I usually like the pure and fresh smell and taste, the slightly roasted one for me tastes even better and what's more it's packed with good stuff too. I usually use it for my breakfast (rice porridge, steamed veggies and fried egg).

Quality assurance

Every batch undergoes regular quality testing, including screening for benzopyrene, so you can enjoy your perilla oil with confidence.

Jirisan Chereum's pesticide residue and benzopyrene test reports

Test reports shown: 320 pesticide residues not detected (the maker's sesame seeds, Dec 2022) and benzopyrene not detected, within Korean food safety standards (the maker's sesame oil, May 2025).

Happy Jeong-Eun's perilla oil, benzopyrene-free

Good enough for the ones we love most

We wouldn't settle for anything less than the very best for our own family. Our perilla oil is regularly tested to ensure no detectable benzopyrene.

What is benzopyrene? A naturally occurring compound that can form when foods are exposed to very high temperatures or smoke. In perilla oil, it can develop if the seeds are roasted too aggressively before pressing. Because it is classified as a potential carcinogen, reputable producers test for it regularly.

Happy Jeong-Eun's oils from untoasted to deep roasted

Which perilla oil should I choose?

Fresh-pressed untoasted: light, clean and delicate. The seeds are gently dried using minimal heat, then low-temperature pressed.

Fresh-pressed toasted (this one): a rich, naturally nutty flavor. The seeds are lightly roasted at low temperatures, then low-temperature pressed to preserve flavor and nutrients.

Rich toasted: a deep, bold roasted flavor. The seeds are roasted longer at a controlled temperature, then low-temperature pressed.

Burnt perilla oil, by contrast, tastes strong, bitter and smoky: the seeds are roasted at excessively high temperatures before pressing.

Which oil to use for which dish

Which one for which dish?

Untoasted keeps the pure, natural perilla flavor with no added heat: salads, yogurt, freshly cooked rice, or as a finishing oil.

Toasted (this one) has a balanced roasted flavor and rich, nutty aroma: bibimbap, namul (vegetable side dishes), salad dressings, dipping sauces, baby food and marinades.

Rich toasted has a deep, bold roasted flavor: bibimbap, namul, seaweed soup, meat marinades and Korean BBQ.

All Happy Jeong-Eun perilla oils are regularly tested for benzopyrene and produced in a HACCP-certified facility.

Storage guide: no light, no air, keep cool

Keep it cool, and refrigerate after opening

Keep it away from light. Direct sunlight makes the oil deteriorate and lose quality, which is why it comes in an amber bottle.

Minimize air exposure. Close the cap tightly after each use to slow oxidation, and for the best quality, finish it within 6 months of opening.

Store it cool. Low-temperature pressed oils are sensitive to heat, so refrigerate after opening to keep it fresh and flavorful. It may cloud or set in the fridge or in winter; that doesn't affect its quality.

Product FAQ

Ask a Question
What's the difference between toasted and untoasted perilla oil?

Both start with washed perilla seeds and are low-temperature pressed. For the toasted oil, the seeds are lightly roasted using minimal heat for a short time: it's the one for cooking and finishing dishes. For the untoasted oil, the seeds are only gently dried using minimal heat, without roasting: choose it for a light perilla flavor and the most Omega-3.

Why does sediment form in the oil?

The oil is pressed at the lowest possible temperature, so the perilla's natural dietary fiber stays intact. Because Happy Jeong-Eun's doesn't refine, bleach or deodorize its oils, these fine particles of fiber and trace nutrients slowly settle to the bottom as a harmless sediment.

Is the sediment safe to eat?

Yes. Unlike the dark sediment found in heavily roasted oils, this pale sediment is the perilla's own fiber and trace nutrients, left in by low-temperature pressing. Just shake the bottle before use.

How long does the oil last after opening?

All oils begin to oxidize once they're exposed to air. Unopened, it keeps until the date printed on the bottle. Once opened, finish it within 6 months for the best flavor and quality.

How do I store this?

Keep it away from direct sunlight in a cool place, and refrigerate it after opening. It may cloud or solidify in the fridge or in winter; that's normal and doesn't affect its quality.
