[Bangyudang] Toasted Sesame Oil (S4 · Medium-High Roast)

  • 100% Korea-grown sesame
  • Medium-high roast
  • 1 ingredient
  • Vegan & HACCP-certified

Most sesame oil is made fast. Bangyudang's isn't.

For over 50 years in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, Bangyudang has roasted a single ingredient, Korean sesame, with a level of precision most makers gave up on long ago. Every seed is moisture-calibrated before roasting. Every batch is watched for temperature, time and color, cooled fast the moment the roast peaks, then micro-filtered for purity.

The result is S4 (방유당 헤리티지 참기름 S4), Bangyudang's boldest sesame oil and their signature: rich, smoky and deeply nutty, with a long finish that stays with you.

While many brands cut costs with imported sesame seeds, Bangyudang uses only 100% Korea-grown sesame, a difference you can taste from the very first drop.

Best as a finishing oil. Drizzle it over rice bowls, noodles, grilled vegetables or soups just before serving. 1–2 tablespoons a day is all you need.

Bangyudang Heritage sesame and perilla oil bottles with roasted seeds

Bangyudang Heritage, est. 1972

Most sesame oil is made fast. Bangyudang's isn't. For over 50 years in Gwangju, Gyeonggi-do, Bangyudang has roasted one ingredient, Korean sesame, with a level of care most makers gave up on long ago.

Every seed is moisture-checked before roasting. Every batch is watched for temperature, time and color, cooled fast the moment the roast peaks, then micro-filtered.

S4 is the result: Bangyudang's boldest sesame oil, and their signature. Rich, smoky and deeply nutty, with a long finish. While many brands cut costs with imported seeds, Bangyudang uses only 100% Korea-grown sesame.

Storage guide for Bangyudang sesame oil

Keep it in a cool pantry, not the fridge

Oil has five enemies: light, oxygen, heat, moisture, and metals and enzymes.

Store the bottle indoors at room temperature (59–68°F / 15–20°C), away from direct light. Sunlight and heat speed up oxidation, and in the fridge, condensation can add moisture that dulls the oil.

The four steps that set Bangyudang sesame oil apart

What makes it different?

Moisture. The water left in a washed, dried seed decides its aroma: too much and the oil turns dull and grassy, too little and it scorches. Bangyudang sets it just right for each seed.

Flame. A proprietary 3-stage radiant-heat roast sets the depth of flavor, from soft to boldly nutty.

Rapid cooling. The moment roasting ends, the seeds are cooled fast to lock the aroma in at its peak.

Micro-filtration. Impurities are filtered out, so the oil stays clear and stable from the first drop to the last.

Bangyudang BGST roasting process and technology

BGST process and technology

Bangyudang goes beyond simple roasting with what it calls BGST: moisture set for each seed variety, far-infrared roasting that heats every grain evenly to the core, rapid cooling to lock in the aroma, and research-grade filtration that cuts the compounds behind rancidity.

Far-infrared roasting raises flavor and antioxidants and lowers bitterness

Far-infrared roasting

Far-infrared heat reaches evenly into the core of every seed. Bangyudang says this raises the phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of the sesame, keeps the oil fresh for longer, deepens the flavor and cuts bitterness for a smoother finish.

Bangyudang HACCP certificates and production line

HACCP-certified

Bangyudang's sesame and perilla oil lines are HACCP-certified at every stage, from roasting through filtering and bottling.

Vegan Society certificate of registration for Bangyudang

Vegan-certified

Registered with The Vegan Society: 100% plant-based, with no animal-derived ingredients.

How to enjoy it

Use it as a finishing oil: drizzle over rice bowls, noodles, grilled vegetables or soups just before serving. 1–2 tablespoons a day is plenty.

Product FAQ

Can’t find yours? Just ask us.

Ask a Question
Where are the sesame seeds from?

100% Korea-grown. Bangyudang uses only Korean sesame seeds, never imported ones.

What does it taste like?

S4 is a medium-high roast: rich, smoky and deeply nutty, with a long finish. It works in any Korean recipe that calls for sesame oil.

Can I cook with it over heat?

We don't recommend S4 for high-heat cooking, but it's fine for everyday cooking over medium heat. For high-heat dishes, add it as a finishing drizzle after cooking for a richer, nuttier flavor. The lighter S2 works well in place of regular cooking oil.

How much should I use per day?

1–2 tablespoons (10–30 g) a day is the sweet spot: in a dressing, on vegetables, or drizzled over rice or noodles. Sesame oil is a plant-based fat, so a little goes a long way.

How should I store it?

At room temperature (59–68°F / 15–20°C) in a cool, shady spot, not in the fridge, where condensation adds moisture that dulls the oil. It keeps for 24 months from the production date; the best-before date is printed separately on the bottle.

What about allergies?

The only ingredient is sesame seed, a common allergen. If you have a sesame allergy or any medical concern, please check with your doctor first.

Where is this made - South Korea?
