Sempio Mom’s Pickled Perilla Leaves comes in (real) handy when you need a healthy veggie banchan.
Yes, it comes in a can. But don’t let that scare you! It’s fresh perilla leaves that have been delicately pickled in Sempio’s renowned Soy Sauce, along with a hint of garlic and a touch of gochugaru. The reason we love this product is the taste of the soy-sauce marinade. It has the right balance of umami, garlic and spice. But most importantly, it's not overly salty. (Often times, store-bought perilla kimchi tastes way too salty!) Sempio nailed the pickling sauce with this product.
Buy a few and store it in your pantry. Whip one out during your next BBQ cookout or when you're traveling abroad. In fact, I used to pack a few for my extended business trips in Europe. Nothing like the taste of pickled perilla leaves to remind you of Korea!
Note: The Spicy version is not that spicy. It has just slightly more gochugaru added to the pickling sauce. If you're having trouble picking between the two, try the original flavor first.
Seriously, it's just like my Mom used to make, except its slightly less salty.
