[Muryangsu] Traditional Gochujang

Selected by Korea's Presidential Blue House

[Muryangsu] Traditional Gochujang

  • No imported ingredients
  • No preservatives
  • Aged 6+ months
  • Certified traditional food

Muryangsu is a premium artisan brand that’s new to the public but already carries impressive credentials. It’s the jang of choice at Mosu Seoul, the three-Michelin-star restaurant led by chef Ahn Sung-jae of Netflix’s Culinary Class Wars.

In Korean cooking, doenjang and gochujang belong to the family of “jang,” fermented sauces made from raw ingredients. Great jang means great flavor, and Muryangsu is known among chefs for making it the traditional way, with no shortcuts.

In June 2020, Muryangsu was chosen as an official gift set for Korea’s national patriots and delivered to the Presidential Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae).

Today, we offer Muryangsu Traditional Gochujang (무량수 전통 고추장). It starts with naturally sun-dried Korean red peppers, is seasoned only with house-made meju (fermented soybean) powder and barley malt, and then ages outdoors in large clay jars for at least 6 months.

The result is rich and well balanced, never too salty or too earthy: glossy and velvety, with a mellow sweetness and a clean, lingering heat. It holds Korea’s Traditional Food quality certification from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

So what’s inside?

Full Ingredients List Purified water, glutinous rice, red pepper powder (14.6%), rice syrup (rice, barley malt, enzymes), barley malt, sun-dried sea salt, meju powder (soybeans), soju. Rice, red pepper and soybeans from Korea.

In the box One 400 g or 1 kg container, depending on the size you choose. Made by Manpo Nongsan (만포농산) in Yeongju, South Korea.

To keep Refrigerate as soon as it arrives. Best within 18 months of the production date printed on the package.

Good to know Contains soy and barley (malt), so it isn’t gluten-free. Gochujang is naturally fermented, so it keeps releasing a little gas inside the container. We vacuum-seal every container before it ships to prevent leaks, but changes in air pressure during the flight can still push out a little gas or paste. It’s still safe to eat, and a small leak isn’t grounds for a refund or exchange.

Ask a Question
What is the full ingredients list?

Purified water, glutinous rice (Korean), red pepper powder (14.6%, Korean), rice syrup (rice, barley malt, enzymes), barley malt, sun-dried sea salt, meju powder (Korean soybeans) and soju. No preservatives or additives.

Where are the ingredients from?

Muryangsu uses no imported ingredients. The Korean label marks the glutinous rice, red pepper powder and soybeans as Korean.

Is this gluten-free?

No. It contains barley malt (엿기름), so it isn’t gluten-free. It also contains soy.

How do I store this?

Keep it in the refrigerator as soon as it arrives. With no preservatives, it can swell a little or turn slightly sour over time, which is natural.

What’s the shelf life?

18 months from the production date, which is printed on the package.

Who makes this gochujang?

Muryangsu, made by Manpo Nongsan (만포농산) in Anjeong-myeon, Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province.

Was it really chosen by the Blue House?

Yes. In June 2020, Muryangsu was chosen as an official gift set for Korea’s national patriots and delivered to the Presidential Blue House (Cheong Wa Dae, 청와대).

After a few months, the paste has turned a slightly darker color. Is this normal?

Yes, it’s completely normal. Gochujang keeps fermenting slowly, so it turns a little darker over time. It’s safe to eat.

My jar arrived with a slight leak. Is this OK?

It can happen. Gochujang is naturally fermented, so it keeps releasing a little gas inside the jar. We vacuum-seal every jar before it ships to prevent leaks, but changes in air pressure during the flight can still push out a little gas or paste. It’s still safe to eat, and a small leak isn’t grounds for a refund or exchange.

Where is this made - South Korea?
