On-the-Go Breakfast

[Bangyudang] Misugaru

Misugaru is a nutritious beverage made from a mix of Korean grains.

A variety of Korean grains are ground into a fine powder and mixed with milk or water - to be drunk as a shake. It's quick, tasty and nutritious - filled with protein, vitamins, calcium, magnesium, folate, and selenium. The best part of this shake is that it fills you up while being low on calories. That's why it's one of the most popular on-the-go breakfasts in Korea. (Plus it's caffeine free!)

Bangyudang is a local seed roaster in Gwangju with over 40 years of roasting experience. Their Original Misugaru blend is made with barley, glutinous brown rice and soybeans. They also have a Black Misugaru which is made from 6 different black grains and beans (details below). Bangyudang prides itself in using high-quality, locally-grown grains. They roast the grains at just the right temperature to retain the grains' nutritional value while bringing out its nutty flavor.

Misugaru can be used in many different ways. Drink it cold in the summer. Or mix it with hot milk for a soothing latte. Sprinkle it over ice cream or use it as a topping for patbingsu!

First Experience

I've only tried the sesame one, but it was very good with yoghurt and the honey they also sell on the website. I have yet to try it as a shake but I will now since I'm looking for a coffee replacement (not technically one but a supplement for the morning). It wasn't something I reached for every day, probably ate it a couple times for a post-workout snack. My only complaint is that I wish there was a printed storage instruction because I didn't want to come back on the page a month later to find I didn't store it in the fridge as suggested. I figured it was a dry powder consistency, it didn't need refrigeration. My fault. I would have preferred everything shipped in one big box instead of two (or several) to reduce waste. Also I don't know if it was customs that throughly checked imports, but opening my box and not finding the indestructible bubble wrap that Daniel and Katie demonstrated in their videos was so sad! I wanted to test out the hype! Overall first order from Gochujar went exceptionally well. Prices don't reflect the quality or specialty of the products I bought, but it would want me to venture more into what the website offers.
