[Bangyudang] Misugaru

Misugaru is a nutritious beverage made from a mix of Korean grains.

A variety of Korean grains are ground into a fine powder and mixed with milk or water - to be drunk as a shake. It's quick, tasty and nutritious - filled with protein, vitamins, calcium, magnesium, folate, and selenium. The best part of this shake is that it fills you up while being low on calories. That's why it's one of the most popular on-the-go breakfasts in Korea. (Plus it's caffeine free!)

Bangyudang is a local seed roaster in Gwangju with over 40 years of roasting experience. Their Original Misugaru blend is made with barley, glutinous brown rice and soybeans. They also have a Black Misugaru which is made from 6 different black grains and beans (details below). Bangyudang prides itself in using high-quality, locally-grown grains. They roast the grains at just the right temperature to retain the grains' nutritional value while bringing out its nutty flavor.

Misugaru can be used in many different ways. Drink it cold in the summer. Or mix it with hot milk for a soothing latte. Sprinkle it over ice cream or use it as a topping for patbingsu!

Not sold, but it does good in hot milk

Still on the fence with this product. I think it's because I'm not sure what to do with besides put it in hot milk.

Better than coffee

I purchased the Black Misugaru and it’s absolutely delicious. Just add water and a natural sweetener. You can drink it hot or cold, but I prefer to drink it cold. :) It’s so refreshing and very nutritious. It can very well be a meal replacement or a meal supplement to add extra nutrients to your diet. Very high in nutritional value; excellent source of protein; packed with essential vitamins and minerals. My grandparents used drink misugaru when they were suffering from heat exhaustion during hot summers or if they were low in energy. If you’re feeling dehydrated or need that boost of energy, this is a GREAT healthy option. Everyone and their ancestors in Korea know about this super drink. It’s amazing!

I've been seriously interested in incorporating misugaru powder into my morning routine since I'm always in a rush and can barely find time to gulp down a cup of coffee. I entertained fond memories of drinking cups of misugaru as a child and figured I could 'adultify' this nutritious beverage by adding it to my regular espresso. I ordered the original and black sesame combo and so far, I'm delighted to report that the black sesame is an absolute win. It adds a lovely nuttiness to my espresso that, with milk, makes for a quick and filling morning latte that keeps me reasonably full so that I'm not stuffing my face come lunchtime. It definitely took some time to figure out my proportions (there are no English directions on the back of the packaging), but after some experimenting, I'm finding that three rounded tablespoons are perfect for my morning caffeinated drink. If you get it, I'd say just keep adding spoon by spoon to see what works for you.

I really enjoy this on my very busy days. It's very filling and so simple to make when I'm in hurry. I do add a little sugar or honey just to make it sweeter.
