[Jirisan Chereum] Perilla Seed Powder
For authentic Gamjatang (Korean Pork Bone Soup 감자탕), Sundae-guk (순대국) or Perilla Mushroom Soup (버섯 들깨탕), you'll need a few heaping scoops of Perilla Seed Powder.
In Korean, Perilla Seed Powder is called Deulkkae Garu (들깨가루).
It's made by first toasting perilla seeds, the grinding into a coarse texture.
Perilla seed powder has a deep, earthy taste with a touch of minty, herbal flavor.
The powder adds a nutty, grassy & earthy flavor to spicy Korean stews - it's quite a unique flavor!
The powder is also used to season namul (wild veggie) banchans, as well as Temple-Style Korean cooking.
Perilla seed powder contains a high amount of Omega-3 (ALA), making it a popular ingredient to experiment with in Korean homecooking.
But not all perilla powders are made the same!
Jirisan Chereum - unlike large food companies - does not use imported perilla seeds from China (or other foreign countries).
They grow their perilla 100% domestically in Korea, near the base of Mt. Jirisan.
The company roasts the seeds at a low temperature to retain as much of the seeds' original nutrition.
And it doesn't add any preservatives either - just 100% perilla seeds.
