Our personal favorite

[Sung Gyung] Green Tea Laver

We order Sung Gyung Green Tea Laver throughout the year. We think it's the best-tasting laver (gim) in Korea.

The gim is toasted crispy, lightly oil'd and seasoned perfectly. It reminds us of the gim that we grew up eating - the ones packed in our dosirak lunchboxes. Now, the name of this product is "Green Tea Laver" because a small amount of green tea extract is sprinkled into the laver mix. It's added primarily for health benefits, but you can neither taste nor smell the green tea. Rest assured, it has that classic gim flavor.

Note: The packaging may look outdated - in comparison to the gim made by large food conglomerates. That's because Sung Gyung is a smaller, regional manufacturer. What it lacks in creative packaging, it makes up with incredible flavor and texture. Best of all, they follow a make-to-order principle to ensure that customers get fresh laver.

          How is Gim Made?

Korean Gim starts with harvesting edible seaweed (red algae). But not from any ocean! Gim is harvested specifically from the waters surrounding the Korean Peninsula, starting from late-December to mid-April.

The harvested seaweed is finely chopped and mixed into a large vat of water - like a soup. The soup mixture is then scooped over rectangular porous mats. The water passes through the mat and a thin layer of seaweed mix is left behind. This thin layer is baked at a high temperature (or sun-dried). Then seasoned with oil & salt and baked once more.

How is it advertised in Korea

"Your child's a picky eater? Try Sung Gyung Gim... it works everytime!"
